Oracle's new focus site "Oracle Forms Modernization: Client-server to SOA" includes webcasts from Oracle Product Management, white papers and customer stories.

Oracle and Griffiths Waite provide a roadmap to modernise applications based on Oracle Forms technology by providing an incremental approach for developers who need to extend their business platform to J2EE, SOA and BPM. This allows Oracle Forms customers to retain their investment in Oracle Forms whilst leveraging the opportunities offered by complementing technologies.

The first step to modernisation may be to modernise your user interface. See how Griffiths Waite took this approach with an Oracle Forms Healthcare system (pdf).

BUSINESS RULES - PROVIDING AGILITY IN SOA

Changing markets, increasing competitive pressures and evolving customer needs are placing greater pressure on businesses to adjust their policies and decisions at a faster pace. Further, there is an increasing desire among business users to get into the driver seat for defining how the business is run. Moreover, regulatory constraints are increasingly demanding that businesses have transparency and consistency in their decision making, and that they are able to certify compliance. Business Rules technology has emerged as the solution for addressing these requirements.

Business Rules are also particularly attractive for Service Oriented Architectures (SOA). In SOAs, Business Rules can provide both workflow routing and decision making services, as well as support for policies used exclusively within a single service. Since rules can be shared and centrally managed, and they are largely independent of programs, they are ideal for implementing business policies across any set of software systems.

Oracle Business Rules is a key component of Oracle SOA Suite and provides all the features needed to realise the "agility" and cost reduction benefits of Business Rules. If your organisation is adopting SOA you should also consider using business rules as part of your architecture.
